Sunday

Sunday Solitude

Lord,
My heart desire is that my way would be your way, but I know that is not always the case. Stop me. Cause my heart to grieve if my ways are not your ways. Give me clarity of mind to see your direction. You want to delight in my ways so I pray that I will be faithful to your calling, faithful to your ways, faithful to you.
Amen

Guest post: Tending the Garden

Here is my guest post that was posted on The Confident Mom blog last week.  I encourage you to linger around on Susan's site.  She has some great goodies for sale & for free.

Tending the Garden

Many years ago we lived in the country on 20 acres.  My husband grew up in the country, farming with his dad. My dad is a preacher and I grew up in the city, but always thought the country life sounded amazing.  So I was thrilled when we had the chance to buy land and build a house in the country. I soon found out that it was very different from the city.  But, I still loved raising my kids out in the country in the wide open spaces & I tolerated the “critters”.  We all miss it very much.
One year, I wanted to plant a garden, because that is what you do when you live in the country.  I had never raised a garden before, but since my husband was a farmer I knew he could teach me how.  We tilled up the dirt, planted our seeds and waited to see what would come up.  Much to my amazement plants began to grow. It was wonderful.  I couldn’t wait until it was time to harvest our veggies.
Within a month or so we had a garden full of plants that would soon become vegetables for our table.  I was so excited!  But soon my excitement turned to horror as the grasshoppers moved into my garden and began to eat all the plants.  We could not keep them out.  The only plant they didn’t eat was the okra and my husband and I were the only ones who liked okra.
We tried again the next year, but didn’t have much more success.  If the seed actually sprouted the grasshoppers got it.  I was so frustrated.  Looking over my pitiful little garden I wondered if I would ever learn how to grow a garden that would produce something besides a mob of grasshoppers.
Have you ever looked at your children in the same way?

What am I doing wrong?
Will I ever get this mom thing down?
Will my kids ever learn to obey?

I love the verse, “For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11

I have days when I really question that verse.  I mean really…motherhood is harmful!  You will get your feelings hurt.  You get your toes stomped on.  You get vomited, pooped and sneezed on.
My kids have disappointed me.
 They have embarrassed me.
They make me angry.
 They make me cry.
 They make me proud.

Our third child gave me great cause to worry.  I wondered if he would ever listen to us or would make good choices.  The older he got it seemed that the worse his decisions became.  I spent many a nights praying over him and for him.  He and I really struggled when he was young.  He made me feel like a failure as a mom.
Thankfully, when he was about 12, the Lord showed me Jeremiah 29:11-13 in the context of my relationship with my son.
For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.  Then you will call upon me, and I will listen to you.  You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.  (Jeremiah 29:11-13)

The Lord reminded me that he does have a plan for my son and a plan for me.  It is an excellent plan.  The Lord wants me to seek him and let him take care of my son.  I learned that through seeking the Lord, He guided me in how to handle my son.  There were so many days when I still wondered if my son would have a life outside of a jail cell.  As he entered into his teen years it seemed as though it became worse and I was so tempted to take back the reigns and do things my way.
Today he is 17, only a few months away from 18.  I still have my moments when I wonder about him, but there is one thing that I know for sure.  He loves the Lord.  He may not always follow him as closely as I think he should, but he has a growing, changing relationship with the Lord.  He recently got his first job as an assistant swim instructor and at the end of his first month he was given 3 awards by his boss for outstanding work ethic, integrity and ability to diffuse a volatile situation with a parent. I was so proud of him!
I can look back over the years now and see where the Lord clearly guided me in how I spoke to my son, how I touched him and how I prayed for him.  I mentioned earlier that my son made me feel like a failure as a parent.  Actually, my son has shown me the importance of seeking the Lord in how to be a parent.  He has shown me that I can’t do any of this on my own.
I gave up on the vegetable garden, but I am still working on my other garden…my children.  I’m so thankful the Lord has given me the opportunity to care for these little sprouts. He guides me when weeding needs to be done and allows me to see the fruit that is produced in my children.  By his grace and mercy, someday I will have a bumper crop of children whose heart desire is to love the Lord and share his love with others.
Tend to your garden carefully, recognizing who the real gardener is. Seek him in all you do and watch His fruit be produced in your little sprouts.

Get in the Boat!

I was a guest blogger on The Confident Mom Blog again this week.  Below is my article.

I looked at the calendar and saw six of the seven days for this week full of appointments or events; dentist appointments, orthodontist appointments, sports banquet and biggest of all, my daughters graduation party. And in the midst of it all I am scheduled to write a super encouraging note to you.  To be honest, I really didn’t want to write anything.  The past few weeks have been emotionally and spiritually draining and I felt as if I have nothing left to give, especially any kind of encouragement for moms.  It would be easier for me to sit in my corner and mope about my life and how hard it is.

Ever felt this way?

Spent

Drained

Empty

Yet, you are expected to continue on.

My prayers lately have been,
“Lord, you expect too much of me.  I can’t do this today.  I need a break from life!”

And in the sweet and constant voice of the Spirit I hear,
“Quit looking for a break in life and learn to rest in me!”

Ok, maybe it wasn’t so sweet, but it is constant.

I love the passage in Mark when Jesus tells the disciples, after many long grueling days of meeting the needs of others, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” (Mark 6:31 NIV) So what did they do?  They went out in a boat to a place the Bible says is a “solitary place”.

Just the word, “solitary” sound beautiful to me.  My days are spent being pulled in so many directions, driving kids all over the place, meetings, doctor appointments and household duties.  I want a boat to get into!

The words “mom” and “solitary” should be listed as Antonyms!

Here is Jesus giving me a personal invitation to come away by myself and rest; his permission to draw away.  When I am feeling drained, spent and empty it is usually because I have not been making the time to get away by myself and rest in His words, promises and truth.  I let life get so busy around me that I feel consumed by it.

Think of yourself as a cup.  When we are running from here to there, caring for our kids and/or husband our cup is being poured out.  How are we to refill it?  I try to refill it with all the wrong things most of the time and what happens is I am empty, tired and in a bad mood.  I try to fill it with girl time (time with friends), Facebook or food.  It never works.

When I fill my cup with Living Water I am always satisfied and never left empty.  It is amazing how that works!  When I start my day in prayer with the Lord I am prepared for the day.  When I take time to read my Bible and meditate on scripture I am energized to face whatever is in store for me.  God has so much he wants to speak into my life, but he is waiting until he has my attention.  Unfortunately, that often comes when I am running on empty, but I am so thankful that he is there waiting to fill me up!

Get in the boat and get some rest!

Just a Mom

I wrote this for The Confident Mom blog in February.  I have another post coming to her site next week.

As I stood by my husbands’ side, I could feel many eyes on me. I tried hard to only glance in their direction and not make complete eye contact. I felt very inferior and unimportant. As long as no one talks to me, I will be just fine.
I was standing among women with perfect manicures and hair styles. Their clothes were stylish and classy. And then there was me.

My husband had brought me with him to a business dinner. All real estate agents in his office were meeting for dinner with their spouses. I only knew one other couple but they were busy, so I stood by Scott, happy to not speak to anyone.

One woman did speak to me, “Dana, what do you do?” I hate questions like that. I answered as confidently as I could, “I stay home with our kids.”

“Oh, that is great! Do you work?”she asked. Really? Do I work?

“No, I’m just a mom” I answered.

On the way home I began thinking; why did I feel that what I was doing was so unimportant? Why did I let this professional woman make me want to curl up in the corner because I’m just a mom?

“Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain.” Proverbs 127:1

Maria Magdelena Keverich
Mothers are much like the builders of great structures. Often we only know of the structures built and not of the ones who design it and worked to build it. Chances are, you do not know about Maria Magdalena Keverich, mother of Ludwig van Beethoven. And I doubt you have heard of Ida Stover, mother of Dwight D. Eisenhower. We know of their sons and the great impact they made on our world, but rarely do we talk about the impact their mothers made on them. I often wonder what kind of mother did Daniel (Daniel 1:8-20) have. She raised a son who stood boldly for what he believed was right in spite of possible consequences.

As a mom, I must remember who the architect is and who the builder is. God is the ultimate architect. He has already designed your child with gifts and talents that are meant to be used for His glory. He wants to use me to accomplish that purpose; he has made me the builder. We will not know the end result of our labors until we get to Heaven and meet those who our children have impacted and influenced. How exciting is it to know that God has a special purpose for our children and he wants to use us to accomplish that purpose!

As the builder I must keep my focus on the architect (God), not on what I’m building (my children) or I will lose focus and get discouraged. I do this by studying His plans (Bible) and staying in conversation with my architect on a regular basis. By keeping my heart and mind focused on God, he will guide me and equip me with all I need to raise my children to be the ones he can use for his great purpose. It is not my plan for my children that will succeed, but the plans of God.
My goal as a mom is not to build up godly children, but to be godly myself so that God can use me to build up a heritage of children who will worship Him and love them with all their heart, soul, strength & mind.

For that brief moment at dinner with my husband (that felt like forever) I had lost sight of the amazing ministry that God has called me to. He has called me to be a mom. He has entrusted in my care his children to be raised and trained according to his Word. He has given me the opportunity to be part of a greater purpose as I walk with my children every day, teaching them by my example. God wants to use me to build a lasting legacy through my children!

You are not just a mom! You are a builder in the Kingdom of God, training up his children to become mighty men & women for His glory! Karol Ladd of Positive Life Principles calls us Molders of Mankind (MoM). I love that!

1 Peter 2:5, “you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood”
